We don't keep secrets and don't introduce anyone we don't trust. If someone is untrustworthy they have no business being a part of your team. Word Of Mouth and Public Relations
- by Steve Gilshenen of Gold Tiger Kung Fu (located in Saitama, Kanto, Japan)When marketing your Tai Chi Chuan school, advertising may feel easier. You call a magazine/newspaper and don't have to deal face-to-face, allowing you to stay in your comfort zone. Even printing flyers feels easier than public relations but the reality is that if I see your ad or receive your flyer, it might do nothing to persuade me to go to your school. Ok, your flyer may tell me why I should go but where is the trust? I don't know you. There is no relationship built up where I feel comfortable to give you my money and be open enough to accept you as my teacher. Public relations introduces you without a sale being mentioned. It lets potential students know who you are and allows them to see that you are someone from whom they may want to learn. . ....................................................................................................... Personal Image and Business Systems
- by Steve Gilshenen of Gold Tiger Kung Fu (located in Saitama, Kanto, Japan)Know yourself and your enemy, you will win 100% of the time. Know yourself but not your enemy, you will win 50% of the time. Know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will lose every time. - Sun T'zu
Now, I wouldn't exactly say students are enemies but the concept translates. In its simplest form, know yourself refers to know very well what you teach. We've all heard of "teachers" who learn a form and begin teaching classes. Does knowing how to play 1 song on a guitar qualify someone to be a guitar teacher? This is common sense! Know your Art deeply and keep learning. Don't DO Tai Chi Chuan, BE Tai Chi Chuan! As far as the students side of it, if you are that way inclined, do the Market Research, find Demographics and know who are your potential students. I don't, but it makes sense from a business perspective.
Digging deeper, we break it down into sections:. ....................................................................................................... Read More...

Jet Li aims to make Tai Chi "cool" with new movie.

Li Lianjie (known in much of the world as Jet Li) is making another movie about taijiquan (Tai Chi) and this time he has a point to make.
The new movie, slated for 2012, is being co-produced by Jet Li and Huayi Brothers. Li's insight into the art and the character will be based on his years of study in traditional "internal" and "external" martial arts.
Huayi Brothers Studios have played a roll in several successful movies, including "The Forbidden Kingdom" (2008) with Jet Li and Jacki Chan, and the 2004 mega-hit martial comedy, "Kung Fu Hustle" (simply called Gōngfū in China.)

In August 1973, a big martial arts tournament was held in Kuching, Sarawak to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of independence from Britain. (Sarawak joined Malaysia in 1963.) A favourite to win the tournament was a Karate and Kungfu star from Hong Kong. He and his two brothers were competing in separate divisions. They were the grandsons of the chief martial arts instructor of the former Chinese Imperial Army." They had all won many tournaments, and this heavyweight had once challenged Mohammad Ali.
He would strike fear into his opponents as soon as he entered the arena, punching and kicking, his muscles rippling through his sleeveless upper torso, it was an intimidating sight sending fears through the opponents, Wan said. So much so that 'Mr Hong Kong' received a walkover each time he entered the ring, right up to the semi-final round.
There was a lot of money on this event, and no one expected the Hong Kong star to be taken down in mere seconds by a 34-year-old school teacher from Penang. He was known in Singapore for his tai chi, and was asked to represent them in the absence of a team from Penang. . ....................................................................................................... Five Element Theory vs Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock
2011/04/Fri 15 Filed in: Arts and EntertainmentHumour | Philosophy
How far can a tai chi metaphor go? When you practice and art and follow its philosophy long enough, you eventually start to see it everywhere. You may even be tempted to manifest it in places where it probably shouldn't belong. Case in point: tai chi fanatics on a dance floor.
Another case is the natural attempt to apply five element theory to a game made famous by the hit comedy series, "The Big Bang Theory." In the episode entitled "The Lizard-Spock Expansion", Sheldon proposes adding the variable "Lizard" and "Spock" to the classic "Rock Paper Scissor" game in order to increase the randomness of the outcome.

Pat Rice is retiring "A Taste of China" after 30 amazing years.
The "A Taste of China" TaijiquanATOC Taijiquan seminars and the "USA All Taijiquan Tournaments" have been such an important and lasting fixture in the North American and Global tai chi community that we might have thought that they would go on forever. Of course, anyone who has participated with organizer and co-founder, Pat Rice, knows the amount of work and dedication that is required to manage these very important events.
They are important because they practically created the North American tai chi community. Many other events have modelled themselves after Pat's events, and many groups and organizations have been formed as a result of the connections made in Winchester.

What is Tai Chi ?
2011/01/Wed 26 Filed in: Arts and EntertainmentInstruction and advice
With the rise of martial sports such as Mixed Martial Arts and the UFC, many people are questioning the combat effectiveness of the traditional martial art styles. Some are going so far as to say that traditional martial arts such as taijiquan (tai chi) are no longer effective for combat, or never were in the first place.
Historical documentation aside, the question is a challenge to those who practise taijiquan as a martial art to prove that their art can be used in a fight - not only in self defence, but in a contest with other skilled fighters. Can a taijiquan stylist hold his or her own against an MMA fighter or a martial artist from another style.. ....................................................................................................... Level 1 is not just for beginners
2010/09/Fri 10 Filed in: Arts and EntertainmentInstruction and advice
The most important part of learning an art like tai chi is the foundation. If the foundation is good, the artist can excel. However, if the foundation is neglected, the artist will never achieve greatness.
In fact, it is can be said that mastery can be achieved by those who only practice basics, but it can never be achieved by those who only practise the advanced methods.
Whether you are completely new to tai chi, or you are a student with decades of experience, I strongly suggest that you spend plenty of time working on the basic exercises taught in level one, before you go on to the more advanced and "sophisticated" practices of the advance levels.. .......................................................................................................
