Riverbank Push Hands Day - August 29, 2010

Riverbank Push Hands Day

4126 River Road West,
Ladner (Delta), British Columbia
Canada

Sunday Aug 29
1:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Dinner to follow:
7:00 pm at Danny’s Restaurant
(in the Ironwood Shopping Centre off Steveston Hwy. in Richmond.)

Everyone is welcome, from beginners to masters, and anyone who is interested in two-person work from Bagua to "Full Contact Improv Dancing" will find something to add to their practice. On sunny days we take advantage of the extra space and bring out the long weapons, from swords to spears, so that we can work on our lightness and sensitivity.

Hello Everyone,

Sorry that we have taken so long to get started this year, but here it comes – the first Riverbank Push Hands Day for 2010.  I hope that you and anyone who you think would enjoy a chance to explore two-person work based on centre and relaxation will be able to visit Riverbank, 4126 River Road West, Ladner (Delta), BC on Sunday Aug 29 from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm.  We will be here rain or shine and there is no charge. There will be tea and cool drinks if it is a hot day. People often bring a snack that they can share with others.

If the day is sunny and dry we will be playing out back in the shade of the Weeping Willow Tree. There is lots of room in our backyard so feel free to bring interested friends and relatives who might enjoy watching the two-person side of T’ai Chi. Riverbank is an alcohol and tobacco free zone. On rainy days, we move indoors to play.

As usual, we are planning to end the day around 7:00 pm at Danny’s Restaurant in the Ironwood Shopping Centre off Steveston Hwy. in Richmond. Everyone is welcome to join us there for a great Chinese dinner.  If you can’t come to the Push Hands but would like to come to dinner, please call us in advance at (604) 946-4983 so that we know how big a table to reserve.

If you are coming from Vancouver Island or from the Gulf Islands please let us know and we will pick you up at the Tsawassen ferries. We can also pick up people travelling by bus from the Ladner Bus Loop if you let us know when your bus will arrive.

If you haven’t attended a Riverbank Push Hands Day before and want to know more about them please phone us or send us an email.  Everyone is welcome, from beginners to masters, and anyone who is interested in two-person work from Bagua to Full Contact Improv Dancing will find something to add to their practice. On sunny days we take advantage of the extra space and bring out the long weapons, from swords to spears, so that we can work on our lightness and sensitivity.

2010 is the 16th year that we have been holding Push Hands Days here at Riverbank. We hope to welcome many old friends back and make many more new ones.

Sage advice from a 101 year-old tai chi player.

Sage advice from a

101 year-old tai chi player.

This video comes from a Louisiana Television Station, Channel 5, KSDK. Some very sage advice from a 101-year-old Florine Ferree. More evidence that when someone lives a long time, they are worth listening too.
Positive attitude. Learn to "...find pleasure in almost every situation." Practice every day. "Even in the negatives of life, you can find something that is pleasant and happy and that you can get some fun from."

Autumn Qigong Retreat: part 2

November 5 - 7

“Eighteen Luohan Qigong Exercises” (Sets 10-18)

and

“Balancing the Heart: Medical Qigong”

Dr. Jay Dunbar Winchester, Virginia We emphasize that people who missed last year’s seminar should not hesitate to attend this year, as the second half may be learned independently of the first half. Dr. Jay provides an excellent introduction to include everyone. The Shiba (18) Luohan Qigong is a fifteen-hundred year-old set of meditative calisthenics involving body, mind, breath, qi, and spirit. They are the root of Chinese yoga (dao yin) and martial arts and are regarded as an “internal/external” set, meaning that they are dynamic and athletic as well as meditative, emphasizing stretching and big postures, and also matched breathing and internal visualization. “Balancing The Heart” is a Medical Qigong set. This single session is experiential and includes a wide variety of exercises, both physical  and meditative, drawn from several qigong sets and traditions, designed to support healthy heart and small intestine function, lower blood pressure, improve sleep, reduce anxiety, and promote clarity and a sense of inner peace. Balancing the Heart: Medical Qigong
Friday night 7:00-9:00 p.m.

We begin our retreat weekend with a set of qigong exercises appropriate to everyone at all levels, including beginners. This course may be taken separately.

What is "medical" qigong? What makes one qigong exercise "medical" and another not? We will address these questions and, due to the brevity of this mini-seminar, focus on a single Qi circulation system: the Heart-Small Intestine. This session is experiential and includes a wide variety of exercises, both physical and meditative, drawn from several qigong sets and traditions, designed to support healthy heart and small intestine function, lower blood pressure, improve sleep, reduce anxiety, and promote clarity and a sense of inner peace.

You may also begin to see how aspects of the arts you already practice contain "medical qigong moments"!

Shiba Luohan Qigong: Ancient Health Exercises of Bodhidharma and the 18 Immortals

  • Saturday morning, Session 1: 9:00-12:00
  • Saturday afternoon, Session 2: 230-5:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, Session 3 10:00-2:00 p.m.

Presenting Part 2: Exercises 10-18

Following his presentation of Exercises 1-10 in 2009, Dr. Jay teaches Exercises 10-18 this weekend. We emphasize that people who missed last year's seminar should not hesitate to attend this year, as the second half may be learned independently of the first half. Dr. Jay provides an excellent introduction to include everyone.

The Shiba (18) Luohan Qigong is a fifteen-hundred year-old set of meditative calisthenics involving body, mind, breath, qi, and spirit. Bodhidharma, a boddhisattva (luohan) of the 6th century, 28th patriarch of Buddhism in India, and founder of the Chan (Zen) sect, is said to have traveled to the Shaolin Temple, where he taught this set to the monks to improve their health, enhance their strength and flexibility, fortify their internal energy, and deepen their meditation.

The 18 separate exercises that comprise the Luohan set are the root of Chinese yoga (dao yin) and martial arts. Dr. Jay's version is from the Praying Mantis (tang lang) tradition, learned from three masters, preserved in full detail, and enhanced by the philosophy and whole-body insights of Taijiquan.

Luohan Qiqong is regarded as an "internal/external" set: it is both dynamic and athletic as well as meditative, emphasizing stretching and big postures, but also matched breathing and internal visualization. Anyone can do these "meditative calisthenics," regardless of athletic ability, by keeping to your own level of physical ability, and thus improve your quality of movement and enjoyment of life.

Invigorating yet calming, challenging yet fun, with engaging names such as "Welcoming the Immortals," "Gold Dragon Stretches Claws," "Old Monk Enters Enlightenment" and "Green Dragon Swings Its Tail," the Luohan are a total workout: excellent for stress relief, coordination, stretching, toning, and overall well-being.

Dr. Jay teaches with humor, inspiration, and high energy, in a manner similar to the storied folk image of their creator. (Instructional DVD available, $50)

November 6-7 2010 : Neu-Ulm, Germany

Event Description:
If you want to learn to take your tai chi to the highest possible level, this is the course for you. Wu and Yang Style Tai Chi Lineage Holder Bruce Frantzis will introduce you to the specific energy techniques of Taoism’s 16-part neigong system.

This knowledge, rarely available in the West, is the source from which the entire Taoist art and science of chi development is derived. Bruce will show how the physical and internal chi techniques of neigong can be adapted to any energy, healing or martial art practice. As only a master can do, he will observe the students present and determine what is needed most to take their practice to the next level.

Possible topics include:
  • Increasing and balancing your chi
  • Maintaining physical health and emotional balance
  • Supercharging self-defense techniques
  • Enhancing focus and mental clarity.

Bruce will demonstrate ways to develop chi and reveal the innermost aspects of tai chi. You will discover the connections between small style tai chi (Wu) and large style tai chi (Yang), including both the energetic and movement principles.

Bruce will also introduce Taoist meditation you can practice within your form that goes beyond what is in tai chi as a martial art. Bruce will answer questions related to Chen style tai chi if such practitioners attend, but his primary emphasis will be on the Wu and Yang styles.
