Elements of Tai Chi Training

When one begins to learn tai chi, the focus is usually on simple breathing exercises, proper posture, and simple movement patters. But as one progresses, one learns that in tai chi there is a depth of knowledge that goes far beyond simple calisthenics.

Tai chi teaches the power of harmonizing mind, body, and spirit. As one learns more and more about tai chi, one learns more and more about oneself. Gradually one works through old patterns of thought and emotion, and learns to transcend limitations.

Many students find themselves letting go of old habits like smoking, alcohol, and other addictive behaviour. Students learn more about their body and mind, and in so doing, develop a better sense of what their body needs.

The physical aspect of training includes strength, flexibility, balance, speed, agility, posture, alignment, healthier organs, better digestion, healthy metabolism, stronger bones, reduced inflammation, better breathing, etc.

The mental training cultivates inner peace, awareness, freedom, and understanding.

Many students come to tai chi for health, or for fitness, or for relaxation, or for peace of mind. Others come to tai chi because they are seeking an effective means of self defence.

Whatever the reason one might have for beginning tai chi, the benefits that long term students receive greatly exceed expectations.
